ConsumerWatch: Several Bay Area Cities Offer Free Junk Removal

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) --If you have garbage or furniture that has been taking up space or are in the midst of cleaning out your home, make sure you schedule a garbage pickup.

Several Bay Area cities have a free or low-cost program to pick up large items such as mattresses, couches or appliances. Customers simply need to schedule a pickup a week in advance in most cases.

In San Francisco, residential customers are entitled to two free curbside collections per calendar year, with no charge for the first 10 items.

In Oakland, every household gets one free pick-up per year, a second pick up is available for the first 500 people who request it.

The City of Berkeley offers one bulky waste pick-up per calendar year for single-family homes and multi-unit residential buildings up to 4 units.

In San Jose, there is no limit for pickups of bulky items but there is a small fee.
