Oakland Police Officer Wounded, Suspect Killed In Shooting Incident

OAKLAND (KCBS) -- An Oakland police officer was wounded and a suspect was killed after an exchange of gunfire early Sunday morning.

Police said the incident began shortly after midnight, when two officers were conducting patrols on the 1900 block of 90th Avenue.  They observed three individuals in the area and upon initiating contact, one of the suspects, who they believed was armed with a concealed weapon, fled from the scene.

One officer pursued the fleeing suspect into the 9200 block of Birch Street.  The suspect shot at the officer, who was hit.  The officer returned fire and wounded the suspect.

The officer was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland with a non-life threatening gunshot to the lower extremities.  He remains hospitalized.

KCBS' Bob Butler Reports:

The suspect was also taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead early Sunday morning.

A firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting.  The Oakland Police Department and officials from the Alameda County District Attorney's Office continue to investigate the incident.
