Daily Madden: NFL Needs Better Stadium Experience For Fans

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Are fewer NFL fans going to stadiums to cheer on their teams in favor of watching games on TV?

"You have to admit that it's easier and sometimes better to stay home and watch it on TV than to go to fight traffic, to pay for parking, concessions, and tickets and all these things," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew.

"It's getting pretty doggone expensive, so if you're borderline, it's easy to make the decision to go the other way," said Madden.

Part of the problem is the frequent breaks in action at the stadium for TV commercials. "You're not going to do something about commercial breaks. As we all know, that's what pays for the game," Madden said. "How you fill those commercial opportunities when you're at the game is the thing that they can work on."

Madden said the NFL can address the issue with technology. "They ought to strive to give everyone that goes to the stadium the same information or more than you get at home watching the game... highlights of other games, scores of other games, keeping up on fantasy football. All these things where it's an advantage to stay home and watch it on TV, they have to do as much or better at the stadium."

Listen to the John Madden segment live weekday mornings at 8:15 on KCBS All News 740 AM/106.9 FM.
