Oakland Police Offer $100 Gift Cards For Guns

OAKLAND ( CBS / AP) -- Oakland officials were trying to reduce the number of guns in the city by offering a gift card to any Oakland resident who turns in a gun.

As part of a gun buyback program, the city was handing out $100 gift cards to residents who handed over a working gun at the Oakland Police Department Saturday.

Also Saturday, a group calling itself "100 Women Against Violence" was holding a peacewalk. The group was formed after a spike in the number of homicides, including three children who were killed last year by gunfire.

KCBS' Mark Seelig Reports:

Saturday's events come after three separate shooting incidents in Oakland late Friday and early Saturday, including one that left an 18-year-old man dead.

The teen was fatally shot around 8:45 p.m. in East Oakland.

In two other shooting incidents late Friday and early Saturday police said the intended victims escaped injury.
