Orinda Man Charged In Girlfriend's Murder

ORINDA (CBS SF) -- Contra Costa County prosecutors filed charges Thursday afternoon against a man accused of murdering his live-in girlfriend at their Orinda home Tuesday, according to the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.

James Collin, 62, was charged with one count of murder with an enhancement for use of a deadly weapon in connection with the death of his long-time girlfriend, identified by the county coroner's office Thursday as 56-year-old Evangeline Devera, according to the district attorney's office.

Collin was arrested Tuesday after police received a call from someone in the 600 block of Moraga Way at 12:18 p.m. reporting a homicide.

When police officers approached Collin's home, he confessed that he was responsible for the murder, according to Orinda police.

Officers then entered the house and found Devera lying facedown in a pool of blood in the kitchen, police said.

Autopsy results released Wednesday show that the 56-year-old was killed by blunt force and a sharp force injury to the head.

Collin remains in custody in the Martinez Detention Facility on $1 million bail.

He is set to enter a plea to the murder charge in Martinez on July 9.
