Daily Madden: Drew Brees' Big Contract
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints ended their contract stalemate with the quarterback signing an historic five-year $100 million deal.
"That changes a lot of things," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "Everything is kind of based on salaries of other people... In the housing market you have what they call a comp - what did the same type of house go for in the same area. In football it's the same way with salaries. What is the comp for this player? So when a player goes through another stratosphere, then that takes a whole bunch of players with him."
Brees had to pass a physical, which includes baseline brain testing.
"Everyone has a baseline," Madden said. "It's going to get more and more important.. There are jokes out there that guys try and flunk their baseline, get a low baseline, so if anything happens to them, the baseline is low. We have to watch that those types of things don't happen and we do more education." (7:20)
