ANTIOCH (CBS SF) — A 19-year-old man who allegedly impersonated a police officer in order to rob an Antioch home in May is facing four felony charges as police attempt to locate his accomplice, a police sergeant said.

Contra Costa County prosecutors this week charged Antioch resident Kelsey Scales with burglary, possession of stolen property, attempted auto theft and impersonating an officer in connection with a May 25 robbery attempt in which he and another man impersonated police officers, Sgt. Steve Bias said.

Police said Scales and the other man donned police uniforms obtained from a volunteer at an undisclosed agency and knocked on the door of a home in the 3600 block of Baywood Circle in Antioch around 1:20 a.m. on May 25.

Scales allegedly told the resident that he and his co-conspirator were police officers and had a warrant to search the home, police said.

The two men began to search the front part of the house and told a second resident to stay in a bedroom while they searched the home.

The pair’s uniforms and reasons for searching the home aroused suspicion, and one of the residents confronted the suspects and questioned them, prompting them to leave, according to police.

Antioch detectives’ investigation linked the uniforms to Scales, and he was arrested after they searched his home on July 12 and found the clothing, Bias said.

But police said the teen’s accomplice remains at large. He is described as a black man who is roughly 25 to 30 years old, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and approximately 150 pounds.

Anyone with more information about the crime is asked to call Antioch police Detective Eric McManus at (925) 779-6940. Those wishing to remain anonymous may also send a text to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword ANTIOCH in the body of the text.
