$10,000 Reward For Teen Suspect In Oakland CHP Shooting

OAKLAND (CBS SF) - Oakland police have announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of a 16-year-old boy who is wanted in connection with the attempted murder of a California Highway Patrol officer on July 21, police said.

Three suspects have been arrested and charged with the attempted murder of a peace officer in connection with a shooting on the night of July 21 that blew out the window of a CHP cruiser in Oakland.

According to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, the suspects—Joseph Gonzalez, 18, David Anthony Gonzalez, 23, and Samiuela Sina, 18 -- have also been charged with assault on a peace officer with a semi-automatic firearm, carjacking with a deadly weapon, and evading a peace officer.

David Gonzalez and Sina were arrested the night of the shooting.

Joseph Gonzalez was arrested early the morning of July 24, after an hours-long standoff in an East Oakland neighborhood, police said.

The fourth suspect, 16-year-old Oakland resident Kenyon Thomas, remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous, police said. He is described as black, 5 feet 5 inches tall and 130 pounds. He has short black hair, brown eyes and wears glasses.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Oakland Police Department's major crimes section at (510) 238-3821 or the tip line at (510) 773-2805.

Thomas and Joseph Gonzalez are believed to have been in a black Acura that rammed a CHP car while the CHP officer inside was attempting to pull over a van for a traffic violation in the area of 54th Avenue and International Boulevard at about 10 p.m. on July 21.

Someone inside the Acura then fired at the CHP car near the High Street on-ramp to Interstate Highway 880, shattering the rear window but missing the officer.

Both the Acura and the van involved in the chase fled the scene, speeding onto southbound Highway 880, according to the CHP.

Officers located the van a short time later in a parking lot near 66th Avenue and Highway 880. The van's two occupants, David Gonzalez and Sina, were arrested.

The Acura was found at a Shell gas station near East 10th Street, and officers determined that it had been reported stolen.

Police said they located Joseph Gonzalez and Thomas, who are believed to have been in the Acura the night of the shooting, on the afternoon of July 23 and chased them into a home in the 2300 block of East 24th Street in Oakland.

An hours-long standoff ensued with Oakland police assisted by SWAT teams from Fremont and Union City, the CHP, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the Oakland Housing Authority and the Oakland police Gang Intelligence Task Force.

The standoff lasted until early the next morning, when Joseph Gonzalez was arrested. Thomas remains at large.
