High School Football Player Shot Dead In Richmond; Suspect Arrested
RICHMOND (KCBS) - One suspect was in custody and police were looking for another in connection with Sunday night's fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy in the notoriously violent Iron Triangle area of Richmond, according to police.
Authorities believe the victim, identified as 16-year-old Ulises Grijalva, was talking with the two suspects, identified only as men in their 20s, inside the St. Johns Apartments in the area of 1st and MacDonald streets.
Grijalva was a varsity football player at Kennedy High School. A memorial has been set up for the boy outside the apartment where he was killed.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., the city's "shot spotter" system indicated multiple shots fired. Grijalva appeared to have been shot at close range, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. according to Richmond Police Lt. Bisa French.
Richmond Police Department Sgt. Robert Gray said a patrol officer happened to be nearby and heard the shots. "He advised dispatch of shots. Before he could even finish telling the dispatch, he advised that he had one running from the complex and units responded. He chased the young man, caught him, seconds later, probably 20 ft. away from his patrol car."
"He barely had time to put his patrol car into park and he had to jump out and grab this guy," said Gray.

Authorities were in the process of interviewing that man overnight and into Monday morning, even as the search continued for a second suspect. Police say they believe there are two murder weapons, one of which has been recovered.
Police said the initial investigation did not reveal that the victim had any gang ties. However, authorities believe the two suspects may have gang affiliations.
