Man Drives Into Ocean Near Monterey, Accused Of DUI

PEBBLE BEACH (CBS SF) -- A man was found on a Monterey County beach Thursday morning after driving his Cadillac Escalade into the Pacific Ocean, a Cal Fire captain said.

Crews from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, the California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire responded at 11:03 a.m. to a report that a car had gone into the ocean near 17 Mile Drive and Signal Hill Road in Pebble Beach, Cal Fire Capt. Jennifer Valdez said.

When crews arrived, they found a 26-year-old man, alert and responsive, lying on the beach about 100 to 150 yards off the road, CHP officer Robert Lehman said.

The man extricated himself from the car, which was in about three to four feet of water, Lehman said.

CHP took the man into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence, but released him to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries, Lehman said.

Valdez said Crews used a crane to pull the car out of the water, which she said took no more than 20 minutes.

CHP is investigating the accident.
