SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Archbishop-designate Salvatore Cordileone is stepping into a new, prominent leadership role within the Catholic Diocese of San Francisco in a matter of weeks, bringing with him a record that is well-known in religious and conservative circles.

He has been Bishop of the Oakland Diocese since 2009, and figured prominently in the campaign for Proposition 8, the proposed amendment to the California Constitution defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. He is also an outspoken opponent of abortion and birth control.

“I’ve always believed that when people get to know each other, that breaks down stereotypes, prejudices, prejudgments, when people get to know each other on a human level,” he reasoned.

“Certainly I, by today’s standards, would be conservative on a number of issues,” he continued, “but I don’t approach these issues from a political standpoint. It’s not a political position that determines my thinking. It’s the gospel of Jesus Christ and of what most affirms true of human dignity and justice.”
