Police Investigate Deadly Walnut Creek Sidewalk Crash

WALNUT CREEK (CBS/AP) -- A woman killed in a crash in Walnut Creek Saturday night has been identified as Santa Barbara resident Sherry Hicks, Walnut Creek police said Sunday.

Hicks, 52, was standing on the sidewalk on North Main Street at Parkside Drive with another woman when a speeding vehicle drove up on to the sidewalk and struck them both, according to Lt. Lanny Edwards.

The vehicle then collided with a retaining wall and came to a stop.

Hicks died at the scene, and the other woman was taken to a hospital with severe injuries. Edwards said that woman, whose identity is not being released, remains in critical condition today.

The driver of the vehicle, Walnut Creek resident Hossein Tabrizi, 53, was extricated from the vehicle by emergency personnel and taken to a hospital. He was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, and as of this afternoon remains in custody, Edwards said.

Anyone with information on this collision should call Walnut Creek police at (925) 943-5844.
