Wanted Parolee Escapes Fremont Police Standoff

FREMONT (KCBS) - A wanted parolee has managed to escape from a police standoff in a Fremont neighborhood Monday morning, according to authorities.

SWAT officers fired tear gas into a home on Butano Dr. during the standoff with the unidentified suspect who was not located and was still on the loose at 7:30 a.m, police said.

Earlier in the morning, officers had tried to serve an arrest warrant at the home which is in an area between Interstate 880 and Steven Millard Elementary School.

Neighbors were startled when the tear gas was deployed and officers moved in. "I sleep with the window open," one man said. "And that's when I heard the pop, pop, pop and I heard sirens, that was it."

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

Some streets in the area were closed off, but the scene has since been cleared.

Authorities offered very little in the way of information about the wanted man - saying only that he was wanted for a parole violation.
