Poll Shows Most California Voters Want Citizenship Path For Illegal Immigrants

BERKELEY (CBS/AP) -- A UC Berkeley-Field Poll shows more than two-thirds of California voters favor a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, but many voters don't believe in granting them the same entitlements as legal residents.

Registered voters were asked whether they favored mass deportation, temporary work permits or a path to citizenship.

Fifty-six percent oppose allowing illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses.

And about 65 percent oppose giving illegal immigrants the same health benefits and social services as eligible legal residents.

The poll released Friday is based on 1,183 telephone interviews earlier this month with a random sample of California registered voters. The sampling error margin is plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.
