San Leandro Man Stabbed With Ice Pick; Suspect Leads Police On Chase

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- San Leandro police arrested a Newark man in Oakland early Sunday morning after the suspect stabbed a man at his San Leandro apartment and led police on a short vehicle pursuit, a police lieutenant said.

Police responded to a 911 call about an assault at an apartment complex in the 600 block of Fargo Avenue at 1:05 a.m., Lt. Randall Brandt said.

The 57-year-old victim was found inside his apartment suffering from multiple stab wounds to his upper body, Brandt said.

The victim was stabbed with an object similar to an ice pick by a man he knew, Brandt said. The suspect was identified by the victim as 38-year-old Newark resident Michael Hilburn, who fled the scene in a white Chevrolet Suburban, he said.

Officers found Hilburn in his Suburban near 105th Avenue in Oakland and attempted to pull him over but he fled in his car, Brandt said.

Hilburn pulled over at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Stanley Avenue in Oakland, less than two miles away, and was taken into custody without incident, according to Brandt.

The victim was transported to a hospital where he was treated for his injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Brandt said.

Hilburn was booked into Santa Rita Jail and has been charged with attempted murder, breaking and entering and fleeing police.
