'Dew Tour' Competitions Begin At SF Civic Center

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - An extreme sports event kicked off Thursday in San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza, which has been transformed into a landscape of concrete and dirt ramps for BMX bicyclists and skateboarders.

The Dew Tour Toyota City Championships started at 12:30 p.m. and will run through Sunday in the plaza across from City Hall.

The event will also include "street-style" competitions on Sunday at a closed course downtown on Harrison Street between Fremont and Spear streets, according to organizers.

Musical performances are part of the event, including an appearance by Lil Wayne on Saturday morning.

The Dew Tour competition was criticized earlier this week by San Francisco Supervisor John Avalos, who questioned the time it has taken to set up the event and whether the city should support an event hosted by the soft drink company Mountain Dew.

Avalos also said he would be sending letters of inquiry to various city departments after receiving reports that workers at the site may not have received adequate payment under the city's wage laws. Event organizers have not responded to requests for comment on the supervisor's criticism. More information about the event can be found online at www.dewtour.com.
