Elderly Driver Hits 2 Boys In Crosswalk In Sonoma

SONOMA (CBS SF) -- A 92-year-old man struck and injured two 14-year-old boys in a crosswalk in Sonoma Saturday afternoon, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.

The driver, Sonoma resident Levon Arkelian, was driving south on Fifth Street West around 12:40 p.m. Saturday when he struck the boys in the crosswalk at Curtin Lane, Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Spencer Crum said.

One boy was taken to the hospital for treatment of a possible skull fracture, while the other was treated for abrasions and released.

The crosswalk, located in front Sassarini Elementary School, has yellow flashing lights embedded in the roadway and a flashing sign, both of which were activated when the boys were struck.

Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the accident, but Arkelian apparently did not see the boys, Crum said.

He was cited for failing to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk and referred to the Department of Motor Vehicles for reexamination of his right to hold a driver's license, Crum said said.
