A's Re-Sign Colon, Could Earn Extra $1.2 Million As Starter

OAKLAND (CBS / AP) -- Pitcher Bartolo Colon's new $3 million contract with the Oakland Athletics could pay him an additional $1.2 million as a starter.

The AL West champion A's announced Saturday they had reached agreement on a one-year deal with the right-hander, who still must sit out the final five games of his 50-game suspension for a positive testosterone test.

Colon, the 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner, also can earn $300,000 as a reliever, plus an additional $700,000 as a closer for $1 million total.

He would earn $200,000 each for 10, 15, 17, 20, 22 and 25 starts, and $200,000 each for 140, 150, 160, 170, 180 and 190 innings. He also would make $100,000 each for 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 games finished.

If used as a reliever, the 39-year-old Colon would receive $100,000 each for 40, 50 and 60 relief appearances.
