OAKLAND (KCBS) – Oakland A’s Manager Bob Melvin was named American League Manager of the Year Tuesday.
“They use that term ‘under the radar’ and I think the A’s stayed under the radar the whole time,” John Madden told the KCBS morning crew.
“And then low and behold, they’re there at the end… He probably did a great job of building this roster this year up until the All Star game, and then after the All Star game, they just were darn near — don’t like to use the word dominant — but they were pretty doggone good.”
14th ranked Stanford meets number one Oregon in Eugene Saturday. Madden said Stanford will have their hands full with Oregon coach Chip Kelly’s fast and versatile offense.
“You have to get used to that pace. It’s always up tempo,” Madden said. “If you take away something here, he’s going to go there, and he’s always ready. And it’s built into the offense that no matter what you do, he has a counter to it.” (8:20)
Listen to the John Madden segment live weekday mornings at 8:15 on KCBS All News 740 AM/106.9 FM. And catch John’s extra report at 9:15 a.m. Mondays and Fridays during the NFL season.
