SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— San Francisco police say a 19-year-old arrested in connection with a Mission District crash that killed two people New Year’s Day will face two counts of murder with possible gang enhancement charges.
Aside from the murder charges, David Morales faces three counts of attempted murder, evading a police officer and for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
According to Officer Gordon Shyy, Morales—a known gang member – caused the crash that killed 26-year-old Francisco Gutierrez on Tuesday morning as he walked into Muzio’s Wine and Liquor store at the northeast corner of the intersection of South Van Ness and 21st Street.
A growing number of candles and flowers are being left outside of the liquor store for the victims. Police said the driver was fleeing from them moments after reports that he shot at three victims in the nearby Valencia Gardens apartment complex.
Tim Gilliazza, a regular customer, said he was shaken over Gutierrez’ death.
“I called my mom last night. I called a bunch of people. It’s like I needed someone to talk to. It’s senseless. It’s really a mindless tragedy,” he said.
Police said Morales hit another car and sent it slamming into the front of the store.
A 29-year-old woman in the other car also died. Her name has not yet been released. The driver of that car was critically hurt and is at San Francisco General Hospital.
Store owner Ed Ibrahim said he can’t shake images from the scene from coming into his head.
“Just like watching a movie, the car hits another car, that car hits a pedestrian, two people died,” Ibrahim said.
