Suspect Killed, Officer Injured During Arrest In Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS/AP) -- A suspect has died and a deputy suffered what was described as non-life threatening injuries after a traffic stop in Oakland Saturday night.

Authorities say during the stop by Alameda County deputies around 9:40 p.m. deputies arrested a passenger in the car.

A sheriff's spokesman says when deputies returned to the car to arrest the driver the driver took off, dragging one of the deputies with him.

KTVU-TV reports other deputies opened fire, hitting the driver multiple times. The station says the injured deputy was hit in the foot by gunfire, but it was not clear if he was hit by gunfire from the driver of the car or from the other deputies.

The driver, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital. The suspect's name has not been released.

The sheriff's office and Oakland police are investigating the incident.
