PLEASANT HILL (KCBS) – A woman riding a San Francisco-bound Bay Area Rapid Transit train used a stun gun to break up a fight between two other passengers, according to authorities.

Just before 8:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, a young rider refused to make room for an older man – and then put him into a headlock as the verbal exchange escalated.

“Another patron who was on the train used a stun gun to get the younger male off the older gentleman while they were fighting on the train,” said Ed Alvarez with the BART Police Department.

“We don’t recommend that. We would like people to be our eyes and ears and be more of a reporting party and good witnesses for us,” Alvarez said.

Authorities identified the passenger who was zapped with the stun gun as 30-year-old Zachary McCabe.

BART Police arrested McCabe at the Pleasant Hill station. He was booked into Contra Costa County jail in Martinez on suspicion of battery on a transit passenger.

The woman who used the stun gun to subdue McCabe will not face any charges at this time.

San Jose attorney and legal analyst Steven Clark said there are several aspects of the incident that should be looked at.

“Clearly the test here is going to be, is it a reasonable use of force? Was it the use of deadly force versus non-deadly force?” he said.

Authorities have not revealed the identity of the woman who used the stun gun.
