Jaeger Wins 800 Freestyle At Santa Clara's Arena Grand Prix

SANTA CLARA (CBS/AP) -- U.S. Olympian Connor Jaeger won the 800-meter freestyle Thursday in the Arena Grand Prix at Santa Clara.

Jaeger, from Fair Haven, N.J., finished in a meet-record 7 minutes, 50.14 seconds.

"It makes me feel good that I swam faster than I did at Charlotte," Jaeger said. "Last year around this time I swam slower than I did in Charlotte and still swam fine at the end of the year. You don't really know how much this actually means for how you're going to perform at the end of the year, but we're continuing to swim faster so I guess that's a good sign."

Australia's Mack Horton was second in 7:59.64, and Canada's Ryan Cochrane followed in 7:59.71.

In the only other timed final, Canada's Tabitha Baumann won the women's 1,500 free in 16:37.03. Mexico's Susana Escobar Torres was second in 16:40.53, and Brazil's Carolina Bilich Queiroz finished third in 17:00.42.
