HOUSTON, Texas (CBS Sports) — The Houston Astros are close to agreeing to terms with starting pitcher Mark Appel, CBS Sports has confirmed. Appel was selected as the top overall pick in last week’s MLB draft.

Appel will graduate from Stanford with a degree in management science and engineering this coming Sunday and is then expected to sign a big-money deal.

The slot value of the No. 1 overall pick is $7.8 million, and given that Scott Boras is Appel’s agent, don’t expect the signing to be less than that.
