Watsonville Girl Killed In Rollover Crash Near Palo Alto

PALO ALTO (CBS SF) -- An 11-year-old Watsonville girl was killed Saturday morning and five others injured when a pickup truck overturned on northbound Interstate 280 near Palo Alto, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred just after 11:30 a.m. south of Page Mill Road when a white Ford 150 carrying eight people veered left for an unknown reason and then overturned, according to Officer Art Montiel.

The 11-year-old girl was ejected from the vehicle into the roadway and sustained major injuries. She was taken to a hospital but died shortly after her arrival there, Montiel said.

Two other people in the truck, 44-year-old Simon Figueroa and the driver, 37-year-old Maria Campos, both also of Watsonville, were also ejected from the vehicle and sustained major injuries, Montiel said. Five others sustained minor to moderate injuries.

A number of people in the crowded vehicle, including those ejected, appear to have been riding without seatbelts, Montiel said.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been a factor in the crash, Montiel said.

The collision closed the three left lanes of northbound Interstate 280 for around two and a half hours, causing traffic delays.
