Amazon Ramping Up Hiring For Huge New Tracy Warehouse

TRACY (KPIX 5) - Amazon is looking for workers to staff its massive new warehouse in Tracy.

Tracy City Manager Leon Churchill envisions there will be at least 1,000 workers with that number swelling to as many as 4,000 during the holiday shopping season.

"Online orders will come right to this facility," said Churchill.

Many of the warehouse jobs will start at $14 an hour.

James Barrett and about 50 others used computers at San Joaquin County Work Net to send online applications Tuesday.

"Right now it's very hard to get any kind of work, period," said Barrett.

Churchill points out that $14 an hour is a lot for someone who is unemployed, but also pointed out that there will be supervisor roles and support positions available.

Pauline Ng-Cho is applying for an HR job at Amazon. She said the area needs more office-type jobs, and hopes the warehouse is a start.

"You do need H-R persons and accounting staff to support these jobs," said Ng-Cho.

The company's website listed hiring for 18 open roles in Tracy on Tuesday.

"There is a wide array of duties and responsibilities that have to be fulfilled," said Churchill.

This project has a very tight deadline. Amazon wants the facility to open on October 1st -- just in time for the holiday shopping season.
