Palo Alto Police Warn Residents About Spike In Property Crime

PALO ALTO (KCBS)— Palo Alto is seeing a large increase in property crime, especially home burglaries. Police are now reminding residents with the warning, 'lock it or lose it'.

While statistics show there's very little violent crime in the area, that's not the case with property crime.

Palo Alto police spokesman Sean Downey said there have been six residential burglaries in the past six days. He said items missing from three of the burglaries included a wedding ring, an iPhone, a MacBook and even a revolver.

In two cases, possessions were worth approximately $4,000 to $5,000 each. Over the past several months, the department has fought a spate of auto burglaries with help from other law-enforcement agencies.

Police said a large percentage of the crimes are occurring because homeowners aren't taking the simple precautions of locking their doors and windows. Patrols have been stepped up in light of the recent spike.
