Man Killed In Jet Ski Crash Near Bethel Island

BETHEL ISLAND (CBS SF) - A man riding a Jet Ski was killed in a collision on the water near Bethel Island on Sunday afternoon, a Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman said.

The crash occurred in the water near Franks Tract State Recreation Area and Sand Mound Slough when the Jet Ski and a Yamaha WaveRunner collided, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies responded to a medical call at Sugar Barge R.V. Resort and Marina on Bethel Island at 1:48 p.m., sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

A boater who was not involved in the accident had picked up the victim and CPR was being performed on him when deputies arrived, Lee said. He was transported to Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch where he later died.

The victim was identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office Monday as 57-year-old Andrew Whitney, of Pioneer in Amador County.

Sheriff's Lt. Doug Powell said the operators of both watercraft had "limited experience and no boating education."

Anyone with information on the collision is asked to call the Contra Costa County sheriff's Marine Patrol at (925) 427-8507.
