Man Allegedly Downloads Child Porn While At Santa Cruz Police Station On Child Porn Charge

SANTA CRUZ (CBS SF) -- A man arrested for multiple counts of possession of child pornography in Boulder Creek downloaded more child pornography during an interview at a police station in Santa Cruz on Wednesday, police said.

Walter Louis Gafvert III, 48, was arrested at his home in the 13000 block of state Highway 9 in the census-designated place of Boulder Creek on Wednesday, police said.

Police said Gafvert had been formerly involved in the adult pornography business under various aliases.

Detectives began the investigation back in July following a tip from the Silicon Valley Internet Crimes Against Children task force, which is comprised of federal, state and local law enforcement officials.

Police attained a warrant for Gafvert's Boulder Creek home and obtained digital evidence, including thousands of images depicting child pornography.

Gafvert was located and brought to the Santa Cruz police station for an interview.

Upon searching his phone during the interview, detectives discovered that Gafvert was in possession of child pornography and was also downloading more child pornography at that very moment, according to police.

Gafvert told police he had an addiction to child pornography as well as the drug methamphetamine.

Gafvert confessed to possession of child pornography and wrote a letter of apology during the interview, police said.

He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.

Investigators are working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Child Victim Protection Program to go through the images and videos in an effort to identify the depicted children.

Anyone with information regarding Gafvert is asked to contact police at (831) 420-5820.
