SAN JOSE (CBS / AP) — San Jose State University is reporting higher pass rates for students who took online classes in a summer program, a significant improvement over students who took the same classes in the spring.

Eighty-three percent of summer students in elementary statistics earned a C or better, compared with about 51 percent of those in the spring.

Nearly 73 percent of algebra students made the grade compared with 25 percent of those in the spring.

The results are likely to provide a boost to the problem-plagued collaboration between San Jose State and online provider Udacity that was announced with great fanfare in January.

Last month, the school suspended five online classes after more than half of the students failed the final exams.
