Robbery Suspect Arrested After West Oakland Police Chase

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A robbery suspect was arrested Wednesday morning after he led police on a chase that started in West Oakland, a police officer said.

Police attempted to pull over a stolen vehicle near 35th Street and Interstate Highway 580 around 8:40 a.m., Oakland police Officer J. Moore said.

The suspect drove away and went onto eastbound I-580. He eventually crashed into the center divide near Grand Avenue and fled on foot, leaving the car behind, Moore said.

He ran through the yard at Lakeview Elementary School at 746 Grand Ave., which is now an Oakland Unified School District administrative building.

Police arrested him nearby around 9 a.m. in the 400 block of Crescent Street, according to police.

School district spokesman Troy Flint said the building went on lockdown for about 15 minutes when the robbery suspect ran onto the campus around 9 a.m.
