Child Struck, Killed Outside Middle School In Byron

BYRON (CBS SF) -- A 12-year-old boy fatally struck while riding a bicycle in front of his middle school in unincorporated Byron Monday morning has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as Burgess Hu.

Hu, a Discovery Bay resident, was struck at 7:48 a.m. on Byron Highway near Hoffman Lane, near Excelsior Middle School, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Excelsior Middle School is located nearby at 14301 Byron Highway.

A mother in a black GMC Yukon had just dropped her children off at the school and was turning onto northbound Byron Highway when she thought she hit something, CHP Officer John Fransen said. She pulled over to the shoulder and realized she had struck a child who also went to the school with her children.

The woman pulled over and realized she had struck Hu, who was wearing a helmet but was pronounced dead at the scene, Fransen said. According to Fransen there are no sidewalks at the location; only shoulders on the road.

The woman is cooperating with investigators and the case appears to be a tragic accident, Fransen said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call the CHP's Contra Costa office at (925) 646-4980.

The CHP is also hosting a traffic safety fair this Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Brentwood Senior Activity Center, located at 193 Griffith Lane in Brentwood.
