KRON 4 News Crew Target Of Robbery Attempt, Guard Shoots Suspect

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — A security guard working for KRON-TV shot a man who was allegedly trying to rob a reporter in San Francisco’s Bayview District Friday night.

KPIX 5 has learned the reporter had just finished an interview near Third Street and La Salle Avenue when two men armed with a gun demanded his camera and gear.

During the robbery attempt, the security guard accompanying the reporter shot one of the suspected thieves in the leg. The suspect was driven to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment. The guard called police to tell them what happened and officers were waiting at the hospital.

Authorities have not released the names of the suspects.

The security guard recently retired from the Oakland Police Department. The reporter was not physically hurt during the incident.

Bay Area television stations, including KPIX 5, regularly hire security guards for news crews in areas that pose a security risk.
