Phil Matier: SFPD To Go After Recycling 'Pirates'

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — San Francisco police say they're going to start going after recycling pirates. Those are the people they claim (some residents concur) that are going through recycling bins that residents leave out for collection.

This is an issue that comes in waves and apparently the problem is having one of its on moments. It makes sense that when you put out your recyclables that someone is going to come out and collect them before the city does to make some cash on the deposits from bottles.

The issue is sometimes the people leave a mess and make too much noise for residents. Think of them as recycling poachers if you will and this is against the law, so the cops can go after them.

Matier: San Francisco Recycling Pirates.

Often times it's the elderly going around with sticks collecting bottles, but at times we see trucks rolling around collecting cardboard. A nickel here and a nickel there do add up as a loss for Recology (San Francisco's recycling company).

If you took 20 bottles out of someone's bin it would probably equal about a dollar. I'm not sure how many of these cases would end up before a judge.
