Suspected Arrested, Another Sought After Robbery And Standoff In Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) - A robber suspect has been arrested and another is still on the loose after a robber that led to a standoff and search on the campus of an Oakland elementary school.

Two armed men held someone up at gunpoint in the 2200 block of 83rd Avenue in East Oakland around 11 a.m. Monday morning, according to Oakland police. Officers responded and the two suspects then got away on foot.

One of the suspects then went into a church where he briefly held a hostage. The SWAT team swiftly responded and was able to resolve that situation peacefully. The robbery suspect was arrested and the hostage was set free. However the second suspect, who at one point ran through a schoolyard, fled the scene.

Heavy police presence was visible in the area. Traffic was re-routed as tactical officers armed with heavy weaponry and camouflage went going block-to-block in their search, including a through search of the school,  Aspire Academy.

"Three of my friends were crying, because they were scared of something that happened," recalled Aspire Academy first grader Johs Vete.

Police never located the suspect, and they cleared the scene at 2:30 p.m. Nobody was hurt during the ordeal.
