Person Rescued From Water Following Crash, Dispute On San Mateo Bridge

SAN MATEO (CBS SF) — The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued the person who went into the water from the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge after a disagreement that occurred following a vehicle accident on the bridge Friday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

All westbound and eastbound lanes of state Highway 92 on the bridge have reopened as of shortly after 4 p.m., but traffic remains snarled in the area, CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.

The collision was originally reported at 2:25 p.m. involving a white Honda SUV and possibly another vehicle, according to Van Eckhardt.

He said that after the accident, two relatives in one of the vehicles got into a disagreement and one of them ended up in the water.

The Coast Guard was called in to rescue the person near the south side of the bridge, a section that is only about 15 feet above the water.

A Sig-alert was called at 2:34 p.m. and updated at 3:02 p.m. indicating that traffic was at a standstill in both directions of state Highway 92. For a time, the two right eastbound lanes were blocked and the left lane in the westbound direction was blocked by emergency crews, according to the CHP.
