Daily Madden: The NFL Could Use A D-League

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - A new professional football league is in the works. The A11FL plans to start playing spring football next year. Is there room for a second outdoor pro football league?

"I think there's a place for one, if no other place than (as a) developmental league," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "The NFL has all the networks tied up now... That was always the opening for a new league to compete. I don't think that will happen."

The NFL just signed a contract with CBS for a new Thursday night schedule. "I don't think it will be a league that will compete with the NFL, but I think there are a lot of players out there, and if you look, there are so many injuries, and so many next man ups, and practice squad guys having to play. I could see a developmental league, you know a D-League, in football. A league that would work in conjunction with the NFL would be good." (7:00)
