Famous Hipster Mustache Cat From South Bay Stars In Charity Marketing Pitch

CAMPBELL (CBS SF) -- A Silicon Valley animal shelter is using one of its more famous former residents and the power of Internet cat infatuations to help other shelter cats in need.

Hamilton the Hipster Cat, who has gained Internet fame for his distinctive hipster mustache, commands a huge following on Facebook with 86,624 "Likes" at last check, and on Instagram, and even appears in his own line of t-shirts.

Now Hamilton is one of four famous Internet cats being used in a marketing campaign by a cat litter company to provide free litter to shelters, to free up funds for animal care.

The winner of a popular online vote will get 20,000 pounds of litter from Iowa-based World's Best Cat Litter sent to their favorite shelter, with 2nd, 3rd and 4th place receiving lesser amounts.

Hamilton's mustachioed mug is going up against Lil Bub, Nala Cat and Murdock the Marvelous – each Internet stars in their own right.

Hamilton was brought to the Humane Society of Silicon Valley as a two-month old kitten found among a feral colony, according to the HSSV and later adopted by stand-up comedian Jay Stowe after others passed up on the kitten for being too skittish.
