SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault on a 6-year-old girl near an Oakland elementary school on Friday.

Oakland police said the assault happened in the 900 block of East 28th Street near Bella Vista Elementary School.

At about 3:15 p.m. on Friday, a man lured the young girl away from the school and assaulted her, police said.

Following the assault the victim was able to return to her school and told an adult what had happened to her. The adult reported the assault to police.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his early 20s standing between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, with an average build and black hair, according to police.

Officers said the suspect was wearing a blue and black jacket with black shorts at the time of the assault.

The suspect’s vehicle is described as a silver SUV, police said.

Crime Stoppers of Oakland is offering a reward of up to $7,500 for information leading to an arrest in this case.

Police Sgt. Arturo Bautista said police have set up a command post near the school and they’re also conducting extra patrols in the neighborhood, looking for the vehicle that may have been driven by the suspect.

Police said there are similarities between this case and two others where children of the same age were sexually assaulted.

School district officials are providing mental health counselors who will be on campus all week in addition to strengthening security measures.

Other schools in the area have been alerted to the incident.

The assault remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department’s Special Victims Section at (510) 238-3641, the tip line at (510) 637-0298, or Crime Stoppers of Oakland’s tip line at (510) 777-8572.
