Main Post Offices In Oakland, San Jose Open Late On Tax Day
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- While post offices will not be keeping different hours on tax day, two post offices in the Bay Area are open late in case any late filers cannot make it during regular retail hours Tuesday.
Federal income taxes must be filed by the end of the day Tuesday, but with demand for mail down on tax day because of the increased popularity of online filing, post offices will not be keeping later hours than usual, U.S. Postal Service officials said.
Most post offices will be open during regular retail hours, but two regularly stay open for late collections: the Oakland Main Post Office at 1675 Seventh St. and the San Jose Main Post Office at 1750 Lundy Ave.
Those post offices will close at 8:30 p.m. and the last mail collections from the outside box at both locations will be at 10 p.m., postal officials said.
To ensure that there is no problem with tax filing, the postal service recommends checking collection times on mail drops to make sure that envelopes will be postmarked on time.
The postal service today also reminded late filers to check that proper postage is affixed for the envelope's weight. It costs about 49 cents to mail about three sheets of paper.
Customers who want to make sure their tax forms get through with no problems should use certified mail or return receipt service, the postal service said.
