SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Can the Niner faithful have nothing? Decades before the National Football League licensed a series of ugly sweaters, our moms were rocking sequins and sipping chardonnay at Candlestick point. Back then we were the epicenter of tacky handcrafted fan gear. But now our knitted winter wear doesn’t even crack the top five sweaters in a ranking by Sports Illustrated, the rarefied air enjoyed by rival Seattle Seahawks.
As if losing in the final moments of the NFC Championship Game weren’t torture enough, 49er fans will now have to concede that the NFL-themed holiday gear based on their team colors is far less putrid than the Hawks’ pullover.
Fortunately, the Seahawks were not crowned as the overall ugliest sweater. That honor fell to the Cleveland Browns for this doozy:
A handful of individual jersey-type sweaters are offered for individual stars, and for our money local boy Tom Brady’s can’t be beat.
