Vallejo Police Suspect Arson In Fire On Elementary School Playground

VALLEJO (CBS SF) -- A play structure was destroyed by fire at a Vallejo elementary school Saturday morning and firefighters suspect it was set intentionally, a Vallejo fire captain said.

Firefighters initially responded to calls at about 10 a.m. that Loma Vista Elementary School at 146 Rainier Ave. was on fire but found only the play structure burning when they arrived, fire Capt. Arthur Gonzales said.

It took crews from two fire engines to put the fire out, which mostly destroyed the plastic play structure, Gonzales said.

The structure was set in an area surrounded by bark chips, and Gonzales said that it appears someone set both the structure and bark on fire.

A fire investigator is looking into exactly how the fire was set, he said. No injuries were reported.
