Josh Trank To Direct Stand-Alone ‘Star Wars’ Film

(CBS SF/AP) – “Chronicle” director Josh Trank will helm one of the planned stand-alone “Star Wars” films.

San Francisco-based Lucasfilm announced Wednesday that the 30-year-old filmmaker will direct one of the two announced “Star Wars” spin-offs being made outside of the third trilogy.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to ‘Star Wars,’ and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”

An earlier announced spinoff is to be led by “Godzilla” director Gareth Edwards.

In addition to directing 2012’s found footage-style science fiction thriller “Chronicle,” Trank is currently working on the new reboot of “Fantastic Four” starring Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller and Jamie Bell.

Lucasfilm gave no details on the subject of the “Star Wars” film. J.J. Abrams is currently in production on “Star Wars: Episode VII,” which will follow “The Return of the Jedi” in chronology.
