BALTIMORE (CBS SF) – Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has been suspended for five games and fined for throwing his bat toward A’s third baseman Alberto Callaspo during Sunday’s game in Baltimore.

Machado is appealing the ruling, and was set to bat second for the Orioles at they host the Red Sox.

The bat-chucking incident came just after A’s reliever Fernando Abad threw a tight pitch to Machado during the eighth inning of a blowout win by Oakland.

Afterward, both benches emptied. Machado and Abad were ejected.

Earlier in the series, Machado and A’s third baseman Josh Donaldson had to be separated after Donaldson tagged the young Oriole more firmly than was appreciated.

Subsequently, the teams had traded several inside pitches and unkind words leading up to the bat throw.
