(KCBS) – The U.S. Open is underway at Pinehurst in North Carolina.

“They say that the course could win this one,” John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. “They always talk about the player against the course, and sometimes the players win when 30 under wins the tournament. And sometimes they’re lucky to beat par. And they say that this U.S. Open and Pinehurst right now is going to be that way.”

Madden said he’d like to see Phil Mickelson at or near the top on the final day.

“When you don’t have Tiger there, then you don’t have that top guy that everyone is shooting at. We don’t have that anymore. So then you kind of have to manufacture that I think. You know,” okay, who’s the guy you have to beat to win this tournament?” And to me that guy right now is Phil Mickelson.” (7:45)
