SALINAS (CBS SF) — A bicyclist was struck and killed by a driver who fled the scene in Salinas early Saturday morning, police said Sunday.

The collision happened around 2:50 a.m. at the intersection of Natividad Road and Los Coches Avenue, according to police

Police said the cyclist, a 27-year-old man, was riding his bicycle through a crosswalk at the intersection when he was hit by a car and sent about 150 feet in the air.

He suffered massive head trauma and internal injuries and died at the scene.

The driver of the car fled and was last seen heading north on Natividad Road.

Police said the suspect car is described only as a light-colored, possibly white, four-door sedan.

Investigators believe the car was traveling at about 70 mph at the time of the fatal collision, police said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information about this case is asked to call Salinas police Officer Lek Livingston at (831) 758-7980 or Sgt. Gerry Ross at (831) 758-7975.
