Daily Madden: A's In Center Stage At Home Run Derby Circus

(KCBS) - Major League Baseball's All-Star festivities kick off Monday night with the Home Run Derby.

"I kind of get into that," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "I like the All-Star break and the All-Star game. And I'll watch the home run derby. And then I'll get bored with it, and then get upset with it -- you know, the way they do it. But I just like the fact that you see the guys down there and other guys rooting for them and you know players having their kids down there. I'm a sucker for all that stuff."

A's All-Star Josh Donaldson will participate. Should A's manager Bob Melvin be concerned with Donaldson's statement that he'll try to hit one out of the stadium?

"You can't worry about that," Madden said. "Then you'd be putting them in glass houses. They'll do stuff worse than that. And if a guy wants to do that and have contests, he'll do it in batting practice someplace anyway." (6:15)

Donaldson, will be facing off against teammate (and defending champion) Yoenis Cespedes and 8 other big-name sluggers.
