SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Fans attending San Francisco Giants games at AT&T Park are greeted by bronze statues of the team’s all-time greats: Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal and Orlando Cepeda. Now a group of fans wants to add one more statue – that of controversial superstar Barry Bonds.
A Kickstarter campaign called #BarryBronze is seeking to crowd-fund $60,000 for the project of commissioning a bronze likeness of the home run king.
San Francisco native Hayden Simmons and his friends came up with the idea after Bonds was snubbed by sportswriters voting for Hall of Fame inductees.
As lifelong Giants fans, we think Barry Bonds was the greatest ballplayer of all time – we also think he deserves his own statue near the greatest ballpark of all time.
… we did some research — turns out similar campaigns have succeeded in the past. For example, the people of Detroit raised over $67K to build a statue of Robocop via Kickstarter.
The group says the statue would be built by sculptor Matt Glen and funded if at least$60,000 is pledged by August 21.
Depending on how much a person contributes, perks are offered such as pins, shirts and other memorabilia, up to getting one’s name and a quote engraved on the statue.
The group seeks to have a statue built by Opening Day next season. A San Francisco Giants spokeswoman said the team would have no comment on the project.
