Recently Discovered Asteroid To Zoom Past Earth Sunday Night

(CBS SF) - A small asteroid will likely go largely unnoticed as it buzzes by Earth this weekend.

NASA says the space rock — known as 2014 RC — will pass closest to earth above New Zealand around 11:18 a.m. Pacific Time Sunday. The asteroid is estimated at roughly 60 feet wide, making it comperable to the rock which shatered above Russia's Ural Mountains in 2013.

Astronomers say 2014 RC poses no threat to Earth. It was first discovered on August 31st by researchers near Tucson, according to NASA. The asteroid will pass about one-tenth the distance between our planet and the moon, leaving it well outside of the orbit path of our geosynchronous satellites.

Researchers say they do expect the asteroid to near Earth again in the future, but they do not project it posing a collision threat.

Stargazers will not be able to see Sunday's flight with the naked eye. Those using a telescope "might glimpse the fast-moving appearance," according to NASA.
