Daily Madden: Eagles' Up-Tempo Play Wears Down The Defense

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - After upsetting the Colts in Indianapolis Monday night, the 2-0 Philadelphia Eagles lead the NFL in offensive yards and points scored.

John Madden said coach Chip Kelly's up-tempo offense is wearing down the defense.

"They don't let you substitute," Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "(The Eagles) don't let them get those (defensive players) off the field when they want to and get the fresh guys in when they want to. And it's hard to get ready for it if you don't do it yourself. If you have that up-tempo offense, then your defense can practice against it."

Madden said there are concerns that the up-tempo play could lead to more injuries.

"With this faster play and getting more plays in, I don't know if that means more injuries or not," Madden said. "So we're going to study that. In colleges, they're getting so many more plays now, but their games are averaging three hours and fifty minutes, where in the NFL, it's like 3:05-3:08. So there's a lot more plays, but then there's a lot more time. As a safety thing, how does this equate to injuries?" (5:55)
